Imphal, March 22 2009:
Three volunteers of the Kanglei Economic Development Organisation (KEDO) and a member of the Manipur Selmit Ihou Lup (MSEL) were bashed by unidentified persons at Nagamapal Keithel in the wee hours (1.15 am) today.
The injured KEDO volunteers have been identified as Soram Ingocha, Soram Nanao and Chingakham Brojen with the MSEL member named one Laishram Itobi.
Recounting the incident, S Ingocha said five seemingly armed persons showed up in a white colour Maruti car at the market shed where the KEDO members were resting sometime after midnight and asking them (four) if they had any identity card began to rain blows without giving the victims any chance to respond or proof their identity.
Apart from the thrashing inside the market shed, the assailants pulled the victims to the concrete pathway built over the Naga river and forced them to lie still even as the bashing continued, maintained Ingocha who added that the assailants also asked them to jump into the filthy Naga river and repeated the thrashing for not complying.
Talking to mediapersons at the Nagamapal Lainingthou Ishingchaibi Shanglen/complex this afternoon, KEDO general secretary Elangbam Bharat strongly denounced thrashing of the four who work as salesmen of ice-cream, tea, water etc at daytime and remain as watchmen of the market section after dusk.
He also thanked personnel of City Police station for their effort to apprehend the assailants who reportedly drove away towards the BT Flyover.
