Imphal, October 03 2010:
In view of the regular recruitment of Police Constables, Riflemen of MR and IRB with the twin aim of providing employment to educated unemployed youths and improving law and order situation, there is an urgent need to upgrade the Manipur Police Training School (MPTS) located at Pangei.
According to a source in MPTS, 3177 armed personnel of 46th batch are currently undergoing training at the school.
But the actual number of armed personnel that should be undergoing training in the 46th batch is 4127 .
Out of them, 400 are personnel of 8th India Reserve (Commando) Battalion and 3727 police personnel (Constables).
As all the 4127 personnel cannot be accommodated in MPTS at a time, around 950 police personnel have been attached to police stations and police outposts located in the four valley districts without giving proper physical training and firing training.
Notwithstanding the report that the State Government has plans to develop and upgrade MPTS to the level of a police training college, massive and hectic recruitment of security personnel has resulted in serious accommodation problem at MPTS.
As such, the new recruits who should be undergoing training in the 46th batch but currently attached to police stations and outposts due to accommodation problems would ne given training after the 46th batch, informed the source.
The 46th batch would pass out within the current month.
The training school also faced many other difficulties when the 4127 new recruits were summoned there for training as the infrastructure available there was quite incompatible with the number of trainees.
One embarrassing problem was inadequate number of latrines/toilets.
There were even complaints from the neighbourhood against defecation by the new recruits in the surrounding paddy fields in the wee ours.
However, the problem was resolved after the concerned authority gave necessary awareness to the trainees.
As for the 3177 personnel who are accommodated at MPTS, they have been undergoing rigorous physical and arms training.
Each company comprising of 100 to 110 personnel are being given training by one Wing Commander, one company Havildar Major and four/five instructors.
This was witnessed during a visit by this reporter to MPTS today.
