Imphal, October 03 2010:
Villagers of Nungkao village in interior Tamenglong district and the birth place of freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu treated the opening of a branch post office in the village as a step towards development.
Nungkao village is located at the top of a hill, 3000 meters above sea level.
The village is 183 kilometers away from Imphal.
One has to take the Imphal-Kangpokpi -Tamei road to reach the village which is in a bad shape.
Villagers hoped that with the opening of the branch post office, road communication too will be developed.
The Nungkao branch post office, mention may be made, was inaugurated by the Post Master General, North East M Lawphniaw, a week back on September 27 in a simple function held at the Imphal head post office.
Nungkao village is the birth place of freedom fighter late Rani Gaidinliu (1915-1993) who fought against British rule.
It has a population of around 1300.The branch office of the postal service was dedicated to the freedom fighter.
Athon Kamei, a resident of the village, hoped that with the opening of the branch post office in the village, at least road communication will be developed.
The postal service will have seen the awful state of roads to this interior village and will be insisting on the authority concerned to improve the condition of the road.
Improvement of the road will help the village job card holders, in receiving wages of MGNREGS which authority will distribute through accounts opened in the post office.
At present job card holders of the village are facing hardships in availing wages of MGNREGS as they have to travel to the nearest post office at Tamenglong district headquarters or Jiribam for the purpose.
Kamei said apart from solving problems in drawing MGNREGS wages, villagers will also be able to get benefits of other schemes of the post office like postal life insurance policy, pension, personnel accident's insurance scheme all to be accentuated by a proper road.
