Protesting strongly against the killing of Pheiroijam Sanajit by troops of 19 Rajput Rifles in an alleged fake encounter yesterday, irate locals of Nongda today set up road blockade along the Imphal-Ukhrul road, said sources.
Sources further said that a Maruti van was attacked in the morning while a 407 mini Tata was partially destroyed in the afternoon for violating the blockade.
All vehicles coming from Ukhrul were stopped at Yaingangpokpi while those from Imphal were stopped by the bandh supporters at Sawombung, added the source.
A high level meeting attended by the Chief Minister O Ibobi, Chief Secretary, DGP, GOC, FCS Minister Parijat and members of the JAC was held this morning but failed to reach any solution on the matter.
GOC R Singh who also attended the meeting besides assuring the JAC members that he would do everything within his means so that such incident does not recur also assured to give instructions to his troops to issue arrest memos while arresting suspects.
Sources further stated that the CM turned down JAC's demand for payment of Rs 5 lakhs to the family members of the victim and also to pay a sum of Rs 5000 every month till the children of Sanajit can earn by themselves.
The victim's body is still lying at RIMS morgue as the family members have refused to take back the body following State Govt's failure to meet the JAC demands.
Talking to this reporter, secretary of Poirei Apunba Leimarol Meira paibi warned of continuing the bandh if the Govt fails to concede demands of the JAC at the earliest.
She also said that a rally would be held tonight while a public meeting would be held tomorrow in connection with the killing.
CPI condemns: Communist Party of India, Manipur State Council has strongly condemned the grenade attack at the Sangaiprou residence of Power Minister Phungzathang Tonsing on May 30 evening.
The party also demanded that the Government should pressure Centre to curb excesses being committed by security personnel in the name of counter insurgency.
