In an unprecedented incident, at least in Manipur, a Rifleman of the 44 Assam Rifles went berserk inside the camp yesterday at about 9.45 pm and killed four personnel including a JCO while another was injured in the shooting spree.
Significantly the 44 Assam Rifles camp is located near the official quarters of the Chandel DC.
According to reports received from the police the incident occurred after the AR personnel had a drinking session.
The deceased are identified as Junior Commission Officer Ram Bahadur Chettri (54) of Kobajit village, West Bengal, Havildar Ramkumar Lama (40) of Basnari, Nepal, Rifleman Sangram Keshor (23) of Badgada, Orissa and Subedar Chandra Singh (45) of Kuta, Uttaranchal.
Rifleman Sangram Keshor died while on the way to Leimakhong Army hospital while the others were killed on the spot.
The other injured personnel is identified as Rifleman Parbat Kumar Pande of Nepal.
He is currently undergoing treatment at the Leimakhong Army hospital.
The attacker is identified as Rifleman Sushilkumar, said police sources and added that he fired around 80 rounds from an INSAS rifle.
Shushilkumar has been over overpowered and he along with the INSAS rifle, two magazines and two bullets have been handed over to Chandel police station.
Later he was shifted to Lamphel police station.
Post mortem of the four slain personnel was conducted at RIMS morgue.
The 44 Assam Rifles was recently inducted in Chandel district.
When The Sangai Express contacted the Public Relations Officer of Press Information Bureau (Defence Wing) the officer confirmed the incident and added that while three died on the spot another passed away at the Leimakhong Army Hospital.
It was a case of the Rifleman running amok, said the PRO and added that the shooting could be due to some personal dispute.
An FIR has been lodged in connection with the incident, said the PRO and added that investigation is on.
The accused Rifleman, Shushilkumar is from Himachal, informed the PRO.
The bodies of the slain personnel will be flown back to their respective home towns after the formalities are completed, added the PRO.
Bombs explode : Two IEDs planted by suspected militants exploded near the Water Point at Moreh Ward number 9 on NH-39 today at about 9.25 am.
Water Point is a place located near Lalkai Veng.
The bomb explosions however did not cause any injury to anyone.
Significantly, Assam Rifles personnel frequently come to Water Point near Lalkai Veng to fetch water for their use.
No one has claimed responsibility for the blasts.
