Congress party has clinched both the posts of Chairperson and Vice Chairpersons of Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) the election of which was held at the hall of the Council today.
On the other hand, elected representatives of NCP, RJD, MPP and two other independent candidates who have grouped in the the Opposition in the newly constituted Council has formed a body called Councillor Democratic Front.
Kumari Aribam Jiwanlata of Congress party, the elected Councillor from ward no 2 won the post of the Chairperson by securing a total of 18 votes.
She defeated her nearest rival Meinam Ongbi Rajkumari Ranisana, the elected Councillor of NCP from ward no.6 by a margin of 10 votes.
Ranisana could secure only 8 votes and one vote was declared invalid.
Jiwanlata is from Thangmeiband Assembly Constituency and has been elected as Councillor from ward no.2 for three consecutive terms.
Out of the three Councillors vying for the post of Vice Chairperson, Thangkholam of Congress party, who has been elected from ward no.22 came out triumphant by securing a total of 17 votes.
His nearest rival, MPP candidate from ward no.16 secured only 6 votes followed by Prahlad, an independent Councillor elected from ward no.27 with just 4 votes.
Newly elected Chairperson Jiwanlata and Vice Chairperson Thangkholam have already been nominated as the leader and deputy leader of the Congress Party in the Council.
Assuming the office of the Chairperson from today, Jibanlata pledged to work for smooth functioning of the Council and keep Imphal city neat and clean.
On the other hand, four Councillors of NCP, two Independent Candidates and one each from RJD and MPP who have been grouped in the Opposition bench in the 27members Council has formed the Councillor Democratic Front yesterday.
NCP Councillor Meinam Ongbi Rajkumari Ranisana has also been elected as the Chairperson of the Front, and RJD Councillor Ch Joykumar and MPP Councillor M Subhas as Convenor and Co-Convenor respectively.
The Congress secured 16 Wards in IMCpolls.
Ranisana has also been already nominated as the leader of the MPP in the Council.
Ranisana said that she would ensure that salary and pension of the employees are paid in time and ration card issued to all the people.
