An argument and a quarrel over a game of dice took a nasty turn when one of the gamblers shot dead a youth at Langol Games Village Zone I taxi parking under Lamphel police station in Imphal West district at about 8.30 pm yesterday.
According to information received from the spot, Md Aboy of Games Village Zone I and Romen Singh of Games Village Zone II hosted the dice game where Manggoulen alias Manggou Haokip (25) s/o Jungkhojang of Saikul but staying at Games Village Zone IV was one of the bettors.
Another unidentified person who came in a red colour car (Santro Xing) also joined the game.
As the game of dice went on, a quarrel among the bettors started.
Soon, the man who came in the car drew out a gun and shot at Manggou's head from point blank range.
Even as Manggou was rushed to Shija Hospital immediately, he succumbed to his injuries.
According to complaint filed by Manggou's father at Lamphel police station, the accused appeared to be about 35 to 40 years and with a fat belly.
He fled from the scene in his car towards Iroishemba.
The accused might be well acquainted with the two youth who hosted the dice game, the complaint mentioned.
Manggou had completed Post Graduate Diploma in Pharmacology.
The corpse is being kept at RIMS mortuary.
Following registration of case, Lamphel police have started investigating the case.
On the other hand, a joint action committee has been constituted against the killing after a joint meeting of different communities residing in Games Village area this morning.
The JAC has also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister in the afternoon.
Demanding arrest of the killer, the JAC has called a 24 hours general strike in Games Village area as well as in the hill districts.
Through the memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the JAC urged the Government to book the culprit and bring justice to the murder case.
The JAC advisor Thangkham Lupheng said that the corpse of Manggou would not be claimed until and unless the JAC's demand is fulfilled.
