Imphal, November 18 2010:
Even as the people of Manipur have been reeling under acute shortage of fuel, police have succeeded in seizing 11.3 Kilolitres of diesel stored without
proper authorisation.
The huge amount of clandestine diesel was seized from the house of one Ningombam Meghachandra s/o N Kunjakishore.
Interestingly, Meghachandra's house is located beside the street that passes through Singjamei police station at Kakwa.
A police source informed that Singjamei police station received a report yesterday about storage of a huge quantity of fuel without taking up any safety measures.
Acting on the report, Singjamei Police conducted an enquiry at Meghachandra's home during which a local made tank of 12 Kls capacity was discovered along with a large number of empty jerry cans.
The tank was found containing 11.3 Kls of diesel.
On being asked to produce necessary documents for storing the huge quantity of diesel, Meghachandra could not produce any document nor could he give any convincing explanation.
Subsequently, police informed Imphal West Sub-Divisional Officer to seal the diesel being kept at Meghachandra's house under Essential Commodities Act 1955, Section 6 (A) .
After informing the SDO, the District Magistrate served a show cause notice to the hoarder yesterday itself.
The District Magistrate then issued an order today to seize the diesel hoarded by Meghachandra in an unauthorised manner.
The order also permitted PCTC oil agency to lift the fuel oil.
Consequently, the PCTC sent an oil tanker and took away the hoarded diesel.
