Imphal, October 19 2008:
Normal life in the State was affected due to the general strike called by Khwairamband Bazar street vendors against the eviction drive taken up by the Imphal Municipal Council.
Consequent upon the general strike, most of the passenger buses stayed off the roads crippling inter-district bus services as well as business transactions.
|
Since early morning, women vendors supporting the strike blocked people from delivering vegetables and other goods at Khwairamband market.
This resulted in heated altercations between strike supporters and police personnel.
At Lilong too, general strike supporters, with lathis and sticks in their hands, waited for vehicles coming to deliver goods at markets with the intention of blocking them from proceeding further.
They also resorted to pelting stones at other private vehicles.
Coupled with the general strike and today being Sunday, most of the shops of Khwairamband market remained closed.
