Imphal, November 16:
Despite its commitment of extending all out efforts in preventing possible break out of bird flu, the State Forest Department is facing the problem of lack of vehicles at its disposal for carrying out the mandatory mission.
Disclosing this to The Sangai Express, a highly placed source in the Department informed that all the three vehicles allotted to the officials, which had been taken away for some emergency needs are yet to be returned.
Of the three vehicles, two Gypsys and one Bolero Jeep - one Gypsy is being used by an MLA, who is also the Chairman of a Government undertaking board, the source said.
As a result, the Department is facing a major hurdle in visiting the wetland areas to examine the migratory birds, the source said, adding that currently the vehicles are being used on internal arrangements at the headquarters.
On Saturday, the Department is planning to move along the Mayai Lambi Road to study the migratory birds on the eastern side of Loktak Lake, the source informed.
Meanwhile, the department is contemplating handing over a Cormorant bird for examination to the Veterinary Dept.
