Imphal, July 19 2012:
Though no official declaration has been made about drought in Manipur, Agriculture Department has started distribution of water pump sets to farmers from today at its Mechanised Farm Division, Lamphelpat in view of the acute decline in monsoon rainfall.
Agriculture Minister Md Abdul Nasir handed over water pump sets to Wangoi AC MLA O Lukhoi for distribution to farmers of his Assembly segment.
Md Abdul Nasir said that water pump sets are being distributed to areas where they are in desperate need for paddy cultivation so that the impacts of water shortage can be mitigated to some extent.
So far, water pump sets have been provided to Bishnupur, Moirang, Sugnu, Wangoi, Irong Wabagai and Churachandpur.
He said that water pump sets would be provided to Kakching today itself.
Till date, the Mechanised Farm Division has procured 121 water pump sets and 123 other sets are enroute to Imphal.
In accordance to the Cabinet decision to make urea available at the much subsidised rate of Rs 278.80 per bag, farmers may purchase required quantities of urea from the godown located behind the Mechanised Farm Division at Lamphelpat, informed the Agriculture Minister.
Additional Chief Engineer K Manoranjan, Joint Director Shamu Kabui and ICDP (Rice) in-charge L Ibomcha were also present during distribution of water pump sets today.
