Imphal, July 19 2012:
Women vendors of the three Nupi Keithels of Khwairamband Market today stormed the office of Imphal Municipal Council to protest the issuance of new vendors licences.
Meanwhile, the IMC Chairperson and Councillors have condemned the aggression of the women vendors in the strongest term.
The women vendors stormed the IMC office demanding an immediate halt to issuing vendor licences which has congested all the three Nupi Keithels as well as the temporary market shed.
On the other hand, talking about the sudden assault by women vendors today, IMC Councillors said that arrangements re-locate 25 mosquito-net vendors from the temporary market shed to the Shed nos 7 and 8 of Lakshmi Keithel in accordance to the instruction of the high power committee.
Although this move was objected by a group of women vendors, the IMC could not go against the instruction of the high power committee.
Moreover this arrangement did not disturb the earlier sitting arrangements of the vendors.
It was quite unfortunate for the women vendors to storm IMC building and ransack the office of Vice-Chairperson without ascertaining the facts at a time when the IMC was holding a meeting to thrash out the misunderstanding between the two sides, the Councillors decried.
