Manipur University (MU) today celebrated an overdue first University Day since the Parliament assent in December 27, 2005, for upgrading the University to a Central University status and as provided by the provision under Central norms thereto after.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor of MU, Prof C Amuba informed the gathering that on October 13, 2008, the University Grant Commission (UGC) granted and provided for the general direction and rules and regulations for the award of degrees following which the University has since been awarding degrees annually on October 13, convocation day of the University.
He went on to say that the University Day is a great opportunity to honor former faculty members and its first controller who have worked really hard for the development of the University to the standard that exists today.
According to the VC, the celebration this time will be unexpansive, but promises to take the celebration to a much grander scale in the years to come.
Prof Ng Bijoy Singh, former VC of MU, said that with co-operation and coordination amongst the faculty members and constructive role from the students' community, MU can be developed into an A list university from the present ranking of B standard accredited by the National Assess Act of the National Council.
