Imphal, December 15:
To bring about unity, development and peace in Manipur, the people should be guaranteed full political rights besides ensuring social justice and economic independence, said AMUCO president Yangsosong Koireng while addressing a public discussion programme at Irengband in Bishnupur district.
The discussion programme was organised as part of the year long UNIDEP (Unity, Development and Peace) campaign.
He attributed the existing sorry state of things in Manipur to the utter incompetency of the representatives elected by the people over the years.
Speaking on the occasion, chief of Bungte Chiru village, Richondei Chiru observed that even though there seem to be a certain degree of distrust and tension between the people of the hill districts and the valley, there has been no case of any incident to suggest that there is a deep rooted feeling of animosity between them.
The disparity among the hills and valley and the misunderstanding bettwen them are the creations of politicians and their abject failure to lead the people in the right path, asserted the village chief.
Acknowledging the inevitability of people's participation in the campaign to bring unity, development and peace in the State, president of the Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Manipur, Memchoubi called upon the people to cooperate in the campaign.
Taking part in the discussion programme, 'Father of Social Worker' and advisor of AMUCO Th Iboyaima noted that the economic package provided by the Union Government to the State is not meant for development of the State but to erode the sense of nationalism by making the people fight for the few crores of money.
Creating mutual trust among the different ethnic groups of Manipur is the first step towards bringing unity, development and peace in the State, asserted Iboyaima.
The discussion programme which was also addressed by many resource persons was graced by AMUCO president R Yangsosong Koireng, AMUCO advisor Th Iboyaima, legal advisor of UCOBID I Jugeshwar, chief of Bungt Chiru village Richondei Chiru, president of Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Manipur Memchoubi and representative of Sadar Joute village Manglem Changson as presidium members.
