The two day long Orange Festival was opened today at Tamenglong lower ground by Governor Dr SS Sidhu.
After celebrating the festival for many years at the district level, the festival was celebrated at the State level since the 2/3 years.
Speaking as chief guest on the occasion, Governor Sidhu remarked that even though Tamenglong remains the most backward district in Manipur, oranges produced in the district is of the highest quality.

However, bad communication and poor transportation infrastructure still remaine a bane to the Orange growers of Tamenglong district, he noted.
Whatever is more important for the progress of the district is restoration of peace and harmony, the Governor added.
Nevertheless, he observed that large scale plantation of the fruit would go a long way in the improving the economic condition of the people of Tamenglong district.
Stating that the Khongshang to Tamenglong road being constructed by BRTF is expected to be completed by next year, Sidhu acknowledged the importance of the Tamenglong-Tousem road and Tamei-Tenning road for the development of the district.
He mentioned that he had travelled by the Kangpokpi-Tamei road.
As declared by the Prime Minister, the Chief Minister would be urged to construct a 50 bedded hospital in Tamenglong and to develop Bishnupur-Rengpang road, assured the Governor.
Besides awarding prizes to the winning orange growers and best exhibitors of handloom and handicraft products, Dr Sidhu gave Rs 10,000 to cultural troupes who enthralled the gathering at the inaugural function today.
The Governor also inaugurated a mini rock climbing wall constructed by the Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association there.
He also inaugurated a composite water supply scheme at Tamenglong Hqs.
The scheme implemented by PHED and funded under NLCPR.
The scheme built at the cost of Rs 4.7 crores has an installed capacity of supplying 1.10 million litres of water everyday.
The opening day of the Festival was marked by seminar on orange plantation, river rafting, sight-seeing, exhibition of handloom and handicraft products and oranges.
Altogether 270 stalls are being opened in the Festival.
The opening function was also attended by Tamenglong DC T Panmei and CO of 35 AR Col Virdi.
Ch Aeisang was adjudged the best orange grower while AG Asuipao was named the best bamboo craft producer.
