Temperature dipped to teh lowest 2.3 degree celsius this year this morning forcing the citizens, particularly in Imphal areas to re-drape themselves in warm clothes to ward off the cold.
According to Station Officer of Meteorology Department Kh Meghachandra Wednesday recorded a low of 2.3 degree C after slight fluctuations in the weather conditions in the past few days which included minimum temperature of 5.8 and maximum of 26.2 degree Celsius on January 30, followed by 5.3 and 26.8 the next day, 5.7 and 25.3 on February 1, February 2 recording 3.1 and 26, 2.8 and 26.7 on February 3 before the minimum temperature dipped to the year's lowest this morning.
Commenting that it is unlikely the mercury level would plunge any deeper in the coming days even though the prevailing cold wave condition would persists in the capital areas, the Station Officer also said the following days would be relatively warmer as the winter season is on the wane.
For the record Imphal witnessed the coldest day on January 23, 2008 with the temperature recorded at 1.5 degree celsius while it was 0.7 the same month the previous year, recounted Meghachandra who keeps tap on the weather condition at the Imphal Airport office of Met department.
Citing rampant deforestation, global warming and other natural imbalances as important factors responsible for extremity in the weather conditions, he further opined that such unpredictable fluctuation in mercury levels would continue in the coming years.
