Imphal, December 05:
Acknowledging the steps taken up by AMSU and DESAM to cleanse the election process of student organisa- tions, the proscribed UNLF today said that the efforts taken up by the two student bodies augur well not only for the students but also for the society as a whole.
In a statement, the outfit said that during the last 300 years, the outside influence had posed a great challenge to the identity of the people, but it was only after 1949, when Manipur was annexed by India, that the erosion of moral values started.
Since then the Indianisation process has been threatening to wipe out the distinct identity and cultural values of the people, said the outfit and added that the people have been made to depend on India economically.
India too has been sowing the seeds of communal hatred and sending in large troops of security personnel to muffle the voice of the people.
However today it is clear that the 2000 year legacy of the people of Manipur cannot be defeated by the machinations of India, said UNLF.
The example is the excellent showing shown by our sportpersons despite all the odds stacked against them.
Even in the field of art and culture, Manipur has excelled (Dance, Shumang Lila, Thang-Taa etc).
On top of this the revolutionaries of Manipur have been waging a successful war against the numerically stronger Indian Army, it said.
To gain independence it is important that human resource is tapped fully, said the outfit and added that the constructive steps taken up by student organisations is a step towards this direction.
The first step is therefore education and enlightenment, said the outfit.
It is also important to know the changing global scenario and to be ready to take up the responsibilities when the time comes.
Therefore it is imperative that students and the people do not get drawn to petty and self serving politics.
AMSU and DESAM have taken the right step to cleanse the student elec-tions of all the ills that dog the election system of India, said UNLF.
