Even as a large number of teachers working under Autonomous District Council, Ukhrul demonstrated in front of Adimjati School at Chingmeirong today, to protest the non-payment of 5 months' salary, the Ukhrul Autonomous District Council Teachers' Association has set a 24 hours deadline to the Government to release the pending salary and warned that they would launch a fast unto death agitation if their salaries are not paid then.
Organised under the aegis of Ukhrul Autonomous District Council Teachers' Association, the demonstration was held from 10 am to 5 pm.
Placards with slogans like 'Release the pending pay immediately', 'Don't hold up the pay of teachers and make them suffer', 'Help teachers in imparting quality education to the students', etc were put up during the
demonstration.
Later during the day, a memorandum signed by Association convenor RS Khawungsing, was submitted to the Governor, demanding immediate release of the last 5 months' pay to 186 teachers working under the District Council.
The memorandum also set a deadline of 24 hours to meet the demand and warned of intense agitation including fast unto death in case their demands are not met.
