Police foiled the attempt of the students of Churachandpur district to hold protest demonstration at various parts of the district in pursuance of their demands firing tear gas shells and mock bombs.
In the view of the tense situation, District Magistrate has also imposed curfew under Section 144 (2) of Cr PC for seven days from today.
Responding to the call of Zomi Students� Federation (ZSF), Churachandpur, many students came out to take part in the mass protest demonstration proposed to be held at various parts of the district Hqs at around 10 am.
As the agitating students, many of whom were lifted on buses, started gathering at places like the junctions of Tipaimukh and Red Cross, IB Road Junction, Tiddim Road Junction, Dorcas, Awnsuak Road, Thangzam Road, Nehru Marg Junction, Rengkai, Tuibuong Bazar, Forest Gate, security forces arrived to dissuade them for staging the demonstration.
But as some of the agitating students resorted to pelting stones, the police fired tear gas canisters and mock bombs to bring the situation under control.
DIG Range III M Karnajit, IPS also arrived at the scene of the confrontation to take stock of the situation.
In view of the tense situation prevailing in the district, the District Magistrate has issued prohibitory order for seven days from today.
The places which come under the purview of the restrictions are the area covered by Police Station to Molnom via Tipaimukh road on the north, till Lanva bridge along the same road on the south, from police station to Rengkai bridge along Sugnu Road on the east and till Bungmual along Tipaimukh Road on the west.
The demands of ZSF as enumerated in the memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister on July 15 include, revocation of the Government decision to declare June 18 as State Integrity Day, posting of adequate teachers in the schools and colleges of the hill district, development of infrastructures on Government offices, payment of ex-gratia to 10 slain innocent persons in the name of counter insurgency and filling up the reserved seats of the ST in Government departments.
