The Chairman of the proscribed PREPAK, M Biren alias Achamba (63) who was arrested by Imphal West commandos yesterday was today remanded to police custody for nine days by a Duty Magistrate.
Biren told reporters before entering the Court that he retired from the outfit seven/eight months back.
�After retiring I came back to lead a normal life at my residence,� he said.
Family members said he left home some years back.
Singjamei police registered an FIR case against Biren under Section 121/121 (a) IPC (Waging war against the Government of India) and 20 UAP (Amendment) Act.
The PREPAK leader was supposed to have been produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate but the latter had to refer the case to a Duty Magistrate as Court works in the State were suspended to mourn the passing away of a retired Gauhati High Court Judge.
Police sought a 15 day remand for Biren but the Duty Magistrate granted 9 days remand.
Police records said that Biren joined the Revolutionary Government of Manipur in 1969 and he was arrested by Shillong police the following year.
Biren, a confirmed bachelor then joined PREPAK in 1990 and became its Chairman in 2002.Advocates on behalf of Biren said that he is suffering from respiratory disease and needs medical care.
