Ahead of the Assembly elections sla-ted for February next, revision of electoral rolls to delete names of foreigners, deceased persons and to check multiple inclusion of names in more than one polling station has begun under a new method of appointing booth level officers.
An official source informed that the State Chief Electoral Officer as per the instruction of the Election commission of India had informed Deputy Commissioners to conduct electoral roll revision by recruiting booth level officers.
Under the new method, names of unauthentic electors would be deleted and the draft electoral rolls produced on October 16 while the final and verified rolls would be published on January 1, next year.
In addition to the existing 2001 polling stations in the State, 52 new polling stations would be added in the forthcoming elections, informed the source adding that 3400 electronic voting machines would also be replaced by new ones.
To a question concerning deletion of foreigners from electoral lists, the official informed that the same exercise could be done in Manipur if the political parties want it.
It is pertinent to mention that the Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalswami, Election Commissioners JP Prakash and S Balkrishna would be coming to the State on October 18 to look into preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections.
They would hold meetings with political parties and State officials during their stay.
