Governor's Award, 2012 and RK Sanatombi Devi Award, 2012 was presented today at Asha Jina Complex, North AOC during a glittering ceremony which was attended by Governor Gurbachan Jagat, CM O Ibobi and Education Minister M Oken Singh as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
First Lady of the State, Kiran Jagat graced the function as special guest.
Dianancy Ningthoujam, a class XI student of RK Sanatombi Devi Vidyalaya, Haotal Pangei was the recipient of the Governor's Award for her excellence in academic and co-curricular activities.
She was given a certificate with a cash price of Rs 15,000 .
RK Sanatombi Devi Award winners in different fields for the year 2012 were Chandam Achouba of St Joseph's School, Sangaiprou, Imphal (HSLC exam 2012 topper); Niangzabung, Assistant Teacher of Phungkhothang Govt High School, Churachandpur (Teacher); Rajkumari Rabika devi of Heirangoithong Maibam Leikai, Imphal (Fencing); Shougrakpam Aruna Devi of Irom Meijarao Maning Leikai, Imphal West (Armwrestling); Tongbram Monorama Devi of Patsoi Part-II Awang Leikai, Imphal West (Cycling); Mayanglambam Sumati Devi of Haobam Marak Keisham Leikai, Imphal West (Physically Challenge) and Ngangom Manihal Devi of Imphal East Traffic Police (Traffic Police) .
Addressing the function, Governor Gurbachan said human resource development is vital to a nation's strength, progress and prosperity and education is one of its key elements, maintaining that the central purpose of education is to inculcate among the students the ability to think and apply the knowledge they acquire in class rooms in solving social problems.
The responsibility of imparting knowledge and education rests with the teachers who are considered to be moral guardians, friends, philosophers and guides in moulding the character of the students, added the Governor while stating that together, the students have to acquire knowledge , skill and education so as to enable them to shoulder the responsibilities to be reposed in them by society.
In his speech, Manipur chief minister Ibobi said Northeastern region in general and Manipur in particular have lagged behind in the filed of educational opportunities.
He said thousands of Manipuri boys and girls go to outside states in quest of educational degrees and skills, conceding that a good education outside the state is not something which everyone can afford.
He said, "What we need is educational and professional 'centre for excellence' located within our rich" .
He further said the state Government has been making efforts to meet the ever growing need of education and professional learning, adding the state now has its own full-fledged medical college JNIMS and National Institute of Technology (NIT) .
MLA Victor Keishing; former VC of MU and former chairman of MPSC, Prof IS Khaidem; Under Secretary, Governor's Secretariat, S Pritamkumar; retd IAS officer, A Halim Chowdhury and teachers and students of RK Sanatombi Devi Vidyalaya were also present.
