A gang of extortionists who have been terrorising the people by serving demand letters for a huge amount of money in the name of different UG outfits was pulled by UNLF and one of the member was shot at the right leg according to the gravity of his involvement in the crimes.
Parading the gang members at a place in Thoubal district, one unit commander of UNLF's Central Special Force (CSF) disclosed that the gang member shot at the leg is one Oinam Brojen (48) of Sekmaijing Maning Leikai.
The other members are identified as Thoudam Dhananjoy (44), Laishram Arun (32), Laishram Matam (25) and Laishram Nanao (26) all belonging to Sekmaijing Bazar.
The extortion attempts were undertaken by the five member gang under the leadership of the ring leader Wangkheimayum Rojen alias Ibochou alias John (56) of Wangkhei Meihoubam Lampak, said the CSF commander.
The gang served a demand letter of Rs one lakh to the proprietor of Leibaklei Gas, Kakching besides another demand letter of Rs 5 lakhs to MLA E Biramani of Hiyanglam Assembly Constituency.
The unit commander warned the ring leader Wangkheimayum Rojen alias Ibochou alias John that severe punishment would be awarded to him if he fails to surrender to the UNLF for his crimes within 15 days time.
He said that all the apprehended members would be handed over to respective families after reprimanding them thoroughly not to indulge themselves in such anti-social activities in future.
Moreover, the unit commander warned all those indulging or plotting to extort money from public in the name of the armed outfits to surrender to the outfit at the earliest.
Even capital punishment may be awarded to any one found indulging in such activities during investigation by the party, he cautioned.
He further appealed to all the concerned parents to keep strict vigil against their sons from involving themselves in such anti-social activities.
