Imphal, September 19, 2009:
Hardly 10 hours after an attempt to explode a car-bomb inside the Raj Bhavan compound had been averted when unknown armed persons attacked the residence of Food and Civil Supply and Consumer Affairs Minister, Y Erabot with lathod bombs.
Suspected insurgents fired at least three lathod bombs at the private residence of the Minister located at Khurai Ayangpalli road, just about 500 meters in the north of Imphal East district police headquarters last night around 11 pm, police said.
One of the lathod bombs exploded as it hit the RCC compound wall of the Ministers residence while the other two fell into a pond near the residence.
Police said, the attack was conducted from thickly populated area on the southern side of the Ministers residence.
At the time of the attack, the Minister was inside his residence.
No insurgent group has so far owned up to carrying out the attack at the Minister's home.
However, police suspect a particular underground group who recently forced the FCI godowns at Sangaiporou, Imphal to be closed on the demand of certain percentage of rice to be given to the outfit.
But the Minister personally intervened and opened the godowns so that the supply of PDS items could reach the people in different districts.
The residence of Minister Y Irabot had earlier been targeted by underground insurgents at different times.
Despite all those attacks, Minister Irabot still continues to defy the armed groups' diktat.
