Imphal, September 06 2011:
Not satisfied with the report submitted by the state government about the ongoing blockade on the National Highways in the state, a division bench of the Guahati High Court, Imphal Bench comprising Justice BK Singh and NK Singh today slammed the state government for remaining a silent spectator on the prevailing situation on the NHs.
It may be mentioned that the state government had submitted its report to the court that "The issue has become polarized along ethnic lines and the Government is following a policy of restraint and working to resolve the issue through dialogue process.
The situation is being monitored." On hearing the report of the government the court observed, "We cannot understand what is a highly politically charged matter.
For the good polity, lives of the residents of Manipur cannot be sacrificed" .
The court also questioned the reason why armed CRPF convoys have stopped moving in the National Highways and asked whether the CRPF are doing their duties.
It further observed that the activities of CRPF should be brought to the notice of the Union Secretary (Home), Government of India.
As lives of the residents of the state are at stake, the MHA should make available additional deployment of armed forces sought for by the state government.
Meanwhile, the petitioner of the PIL who sought immediate legal action against the illegal blockade on the National Highways has included S Milan, president of the UNC as a respondent of the PIL filed by him.
