The Gauhati High Court Imphal Bench today directed the state government to pay a compensation amount of Rs five lakh to the family of a person who died in police custody four years back.
One Kshetrimayum Meghamani son of Ghane of Pallel Mamang Leikai of Thoubal district who was arrested by Kakching Police personnel died in the custody of the police allegedly during an interrogation related to a case registered against him.
He was arrested by the police on January 17, 2006 after registering a FIR case against him of killing his wife on January 16, 2006.He died in police custody in the night of January 20 of the same year.
A case was filed in the court of the Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench by the father of the deceased Meghani on the custodial death of his son against the state government represented by Principal Home Secretary, DGP, SP Thoubal District Police, Additional SP Sajiwa Jail and Kakching Police Station.
Advocate Khaidem Mani was the counsel of the petitioner.
The ruling of the court was given by Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench comprising Judges Chief Justice Madan B Lukur and Justice Asok Potsangbam and the ruling stated that government should pay a compensation amount of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased.
The ruling also stated that the compensation amount should be divided into two equal halves to Meghamani's two children, a 14 year-old son and a10 year-old daughter and it should be deposited under a fixed deposit scheme till the children attain 21 years.
The money should be deposited in their names within four weeks time from the date of issue of the order.
