The Society for People Advancement Manipur, SPAM- stands for weaker section of the society, an NGO established with an objective of bringing green revolution in Manipur has completed three year today.
The body observed the day today at its head office Ishikha pat in Imphal east.
On the occasion, deputy director (soil chemistry) Ph Rajendro who attended the function as special invitee announced that like paddy crop competition at the state level, rabi crops competition will also be introduced from the next year.
But unlike the paddy crop competition, the rabi crop competition will be for the UGOs which are growing rabi crops by joining hand hands with the farmers.
Paddy crop competition of the state agriculture department, mention may be made, is held among the individual farmers.
Director of state agriculture, RK Noyonsana who attended the celebration function today as chief guest has said that the objective of bringing green revolution in the state is also objective of her department as well.
Officials of the department are always ready to help the farmers, she added.
With technical know-how from the department, farmers could introduce latest farming technologies for enhancing the productivity, she added.
State fisheries director who K Sharatkumar who was among the guest of honours in the function said that there have come change in the state as fields of the state in the off-season now no more remained empty this days, people started filling it with other crops suited with time.
But, he added there are a lot that can do by the farmers of the state to produce its own sustainable food items.
A new method which combined fish farming with agriculture can also be introduced so as to able to supplement the shortest fish production facing in the state.
Kh Ibohal, assistant professor department of entomology, Central Agricultural University (CAU) who said that
While giving key note address, general secretary, Charlie elaborately expressed the motto and objective of the SPAM and its achievement since the establishment of the NGO.
"We (members of the SPAM) are revolutionaries who struggle for a green revolution.
Turning point to green revolution is the motto of the SPAM which stands for the weaker section of the society," he said.
Though it was a meager one, with the effort of the SPAM, farmers of the state can able to contribute around Rs.3 crores to the state economy.
Out of this, Rs.2.65 crores is by cultivating potato only, he said with proud.
He also said that within the short span of three year since its inception, SPAM has its 32 branches in various parts of the state and is efforting to open more to cover the entire districts.
SPAM is either for the valley or hill people, but for the whole communities settling across the state, further said.
On the occasion, SPAM also distributed award the first three farmers who produced highest yield in potato farming in the last season.
