Imphal, November 12 2009:
The state government is planning to replace street lamps in Imphal area to solar lamps in order to recover, though in small amount, the fund loss of the Power department due to failure to pay power tax by the people.
According to source from the Manipur Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD) department, the Centre has approved the replacement of street lamps to solar lamps in Imphal area under the National Solar Mission.
The street lamps will be replaced at the earliest.
The use of solar lamps would help save the utilisation of power though in little amount.
The source said, the required fund for the replacement of street lamps is under process.
Automatic solar lamps would be used.
Solar plates attached to each lamp would tap solar power during daytime while the same should be used during night time without switching any button.
The initiative would be very helpful for the state, where taxpaying rate is very low.
The project will be implemented by Manipur Renewable Energy Development Agency (MANIREDA) and MAHUD departments under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
Meanwhile, implementation of installing Light Emitting Diode (LED) has begun at nine traffic points.
Earlier, ten such traffic points were identified for the installation of traffic signals.
As one of the ten traffic points is found to be unsuitable, the number of the traffic points has been narrowed down to nine.
The traffic signals would be installed at Keishampat Junction, Kangla Western Gate, Raj Bhavan gate, General Post Office junction, North AOC junction, Kwakeithel junction, Lamlong junction, Khuyathong junction, and Chingamakha junction.
