Cracking its whip against Meelal activists who have set today as the deadline for all the vehicles to carry Meitei Mayek on their name plates, police today impounded vehicles moving around with name plates inscribed in Meitei Mayek and made the owners to erase the same.
Following the threatening statements of Meelal published in the State dailies setting July 25 as the deadline for inscribing the name plates of all the vehicles compulsorily with Meitei Mayek, some of the vehicle owners had already repainted the same plates of their vehicles with Meetei Mayek.
However, in exercise of the power conferred under Section 41, Sub-Section (6) of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 which states that the registration numbers of the vehicles should be written only in languages and scripts recognised in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution along with the registration codes provided by the Central Government to all the States and the Union Territories, the police launched the crackdown against the vehicles moving around with name plates inscribed in Meetei Mayek.
Police personnel were seen stopping such vehicles along the road and making the owners to erase the name plates written in Meetei Mayek.
In front of Nupi Lan complex here, police personnel stopped all the vehicles, including four-wheelers and two wheelers, carrying name plates inscribed with Meetei Mayek and made the owners to scratch out the scripts with the help of pebbles and metal scraps.
According to police sources, the number of two wheelers of various types pulled up during the drive today far outnumbered vehicles of other types.
The drive would be intensified all the more from tomorrow and the police stations in all the districts have been given necessary instructions in this regard.
