Imphal, December 10 2010:
While categorically clarifying that the question of Zeliangrong people inviting the Chief Minister of Manipur to the Orange Festival does not arise as the same festival is organised by the State Government since the last many years, the Zeliangrong Union (AMN) has appreciated the decision of the Chief Minister to grace the festival in spite of the boycott call given by the NYF.
Being one of the most backward districts in all spheres, banning VVIPs from visiting Tamenglong district is nothing less than denying the opportunity for development of the district, the ZU (AMN) remarked in a press release.
"The ZU strongly feels that the VVIPs visit to the district should rather be welcomed by one and all considering the backwardness of the district", it said.
The Chief Minister's strong desire to visit Tamenglong during the Orange Festival is laudable.
However, the ZU would like the Government to pay due attention in securing full public cooperation and participation for grand celebration of the festival rather than focusing on celebrating the festival at any cost.
Exuding that this year's festival, unlike previous ones, would enhance orange productivity in the district, the ZU urged upon the authorities concerned to pay due attention to technical aspects of growing orange plants in scientific manner in view of the extensive wilting of orange plants in the last few years.
Orange being one of the fruits most suitable to the climate of Tamenglong district, the Government should take up necessary steps to provide assistance to the orange growers so as to enable them sustain their livelihood through orange plantation.
Saying that improving economic condition of orange growers would automatically accelerate development activities in the district, ZU said it would be most desirable for all to ensure maximum participation, cooperation and support to the Orange Festival.
