As in other parts of the globe, the 17th World Mental Health Day was also observed along with taking out a rally here today.
Observed under the theme of 'Mental Health in primary care, enhancing treatment and promoting mental health', the event was organised jointly by State Health Services, Manipur State Mental Health Authority and All Manipur Nupi Marup.
Participated by a large number of people including doctors, nurses and leaders of civil organisations, a rally was also taken out from in front of Rupmahal theatre.

After passing through various parts of Imphal, the rallyists converged at Rupmahal again where the main observance function was held with Minister of Health and Family Welfare Ph Parijat as chief guest, vice president of All Manipur Nupi Marup T Ibemhal Devi as functional president and Director of Health Services W Motilal Singh and Head of Department of Clinical Psychology Prof M Akshaykumar as the guests of honour.
Head of Psychiatry of JN Hospital Dr L Surchandra Singh, Head of Psychiatry Department of RIMS Prof N Heramani Singh and Associate Prof Dr RK Lenin of Psychiatry Department, RIMS were among those who spoke as resource persons on topics related to the issue of mental health.
Earlier, in his address as chief guest, Minister Parijat pointed out that number of mental health related problems in insurgency affected Manipur has been on the rise.
However, number of patients coming out to get treatment is still very low.
In order to control this problem, the help of the doctors alone is not enough and all the people need to understand the problem.
Patients should also not shy away from coming out to get treatment, he added.
Dr Motilal observed that apart from the existing conflict situation, abuse of drug and alcohol is another root cause of increasing number of mental disorders in Manipur.
World Mental Health Day was also reportedly observed in Chandel district with Deputy Commissioner of the district L Nabskeshwor Singh as chief guest and Chief Medical Officer of the district N Nabakeshwor as president.
