A suspected PREPAK cadre escaped even as another was apprehended by personnel of Imphal West Police Commandos during a search operation launched at Samurou Mayai Leikai.
A police report said that a team of Imphal West police commandos cordoned off Samurou Mayai Leikai at about 5.30 in the evening based on specific information that some underground activists had come to extort money from the public and conducted a search operation till 7 pm.
The commando team supervised by deputy superintendent of police, Imphal West district, S Ibomcha detained around 25 youths for verification during the search operation.
Among them, one identified as Md Hasim alias Mani (32) of Upokpi of Thoubal was singled out as an activist of PREPAK.
During an on spot interrogation, he disclosed that he came with one of his associate to collect Rs 5000 demanded from the member of Gram Panchayat of the village.
But his associate had made good his escape as soon as the police arrived.
Four activists of different underground groups including a sympathizer were also apprehended by Imphal West Police commandos in separate counter insurgency operations at different places in the last 24 hours.
A statement of Senior SP, Imphal West district, L Kailun said that a sympathizer of KCP identified as Ningthoujam Shantikumar alias Jacky (30) son of N Lukhoi of Khongnang Pheidekbi Makha Leikai was nabbed yesterday, at about 5 pm, from his locality.
On the same day, the police commandos of the same district apprehended two activists of KCP (MC) identified as Haobam Ingo @ Guru (34) son of H Tomba of Kambongbut presently residing at Chingmeirong and Md Habbibur Rahman @ Biju (33) son of late Abdul Rashid of Urup Mayai Leikai.
Rehman was nabbed based on a disclosure made by Ingo.
A self styled corporal of PLA identified as Moirangthem Ajitkumar @ Yaiphaba @ Athouba (43) son of M Shana of Kakwa Maibam Leikai was arrested by the same Imphal West Police Commands about 3.15 am today from the verandah of TMDA Culb, Maibam Leikai, the statement added.
