On the occasion of the year's World Red Cross Day being celebrated under the theme 'Together for Humanity' Governor Dr SS Sidhu inaugurated a Red cross building at Mahatma Gandhi Avenue today.
Gracing the celebration, organised by Indian Red Cross Society, Manipur State branch as the chief guest the Governor recalled the origin of the global movement in remembrance of the humane contributions by the red Cross founder Jean Henry Dunant of Switzerland.
He highlighted the objectives and endeavours of the Red Cross as an organisation of 170 Nations with the common agenda of dedication towards uplifting the socio-economic conditions of the poor and deprived section of the international community and addressing health problems cutting across barriers of nationality and religious affinity.
Dr sidhu also referred to the sacrificial spirit, tenderness and considerate attitude as some important criteria that have to be imbibed by members/volunteers of the Red Cross organisation.
Regarding importance of the Red Cross movement in Manipur, the Governor expressed that with people of different communities and cultural background settled in the State the task of the global organisation and its local volunteers are even more significant and inevitable.
Dr Sidhu also exuded confidence that with the inauguration of the Red Cross building today, the organisation will function more prominently and would be able to extend its benefits and values to the needy people.
A spot painting competition for children and blood donation by adult members of the society were the other highlights of the celebration.
