Imphal, June 12 2012:
If produced on large scale and exported outside the state, cultivation of local rice, which is more tastier than Basmati rice so proclaimed as the best quality rice in India, will prove to be a profitable business, Tamenglong MLA, Janghenlung Panmei has exclaimed.
The MLA was speaking as Guest of Honour of the 3rd State Level Symposium on System of Rice Intensification (SRI) at Classic hotel, North AOC, here today.
MLA Janghenlung Panmei further stated that people in Delhi who purchase Basmati rice at such a high price just for the taste it gives would be mesmerized if they were given the opportunity to taste our local rice.
So, if the local rice production could be increased and exported outside Manipur, then the farmers would be able to gain more profit than from selling their produce at local market, he observed, adding that 'we need to produce more of our indigenous rice and make the whole world experience its unique taste so as to make Manipur the Land of Gold' .
The MLA pointed out that if the farmers of Manipur can produce rice without using any chemical fertilizers, the price of rice can further be increased.
The function was graced by Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Abdul Nasir as Chief Guest.
