Guwahati, November 14:
Justice was finally delivered to little Varun Sandilya, though he is no more in this world, on Children's Day today when his killer was handed the death sentence by a Court.
In a landmark judgement, Kamrup District and Session Judge D K Deb Roy, in a 53-page judgement, ordered that killer Anupam Das be "hanged by neck till death" after citing the case as the "rarest of rare cases".
On January 22, 2000, nine-year-old Varun was sexually abused and killed by Anupam, who was a tenant in his father Surajit Sandilya's house in the Zoo-Tiniali area of the city.
The incident sparked State-wide protests.
Barun was murdered on January 22, 2000 when the entire family was preparing for the belated birthday bash of Barun.
His tenth birthday was on January 17, but the party was postponed for January 22 due to some problems.
Anupam was arrested by city police the same day under section 302, 201, and 377 of the IPC.
But the criminal managed to escape from the premises of the Sessions Court on December 12, 2001.He was to be produced in the Court the same day.
Anupam was again caught by Barun's father and some private informers, the family had engaged, from Imphal on May 14, 2006.Later, Manipur police arrested him on the basis of the case and handed him over to the Guwahati police.
Anupam had been languishing in the Guwahati central jail since then.
After the gruesome murder, Anupam was arrested.
But while in custody, he escaped and remained incognito for five years till Surajit traced him to Manipur where he had been living with an assumed name.
