Imphal, March 28:
A series of agitation would be launched in the State next month just before the Lok Sabha election demanding the removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the State, disclosed Y Kapur convenor "Committee Against Fake Encounter and Custodial Death".
Interacting with media-persons at Uripok Sorbon Thingel Leikai today, Y Kapur asserted that security personnel under the immunity granted by the various draconian laws are unleashing a reign of terror in the State by committing all sorts of atrocities on innocent civilians in the name of counter insurgency.
He also said that State politicians and leaders who are supposed to be the guardians of the people, by remaining a mute spectator to the excesses of the security forces, have compounded the woes of the masses.
To put an end to the excesses of the security forces once and for all, demand for removal of draconian laws from the State has become the foremost duty of the people, said Kapur adding that the committee which is an amalgamation of over 31 organizations have completed all necessary preparation for making the proposed agitation a grand success.
Commenting on the brutal killing of Tejkumar by Assam Rifles personnel after picking him from Uripok Laikhurembi Lampak in broad daylight, Kapur said that the State Government's claim of having handed over the Tejkumar case to the CBI is baseless and unfounded because no cases of atrocities or killings by the security forces can be handed over to the CBI without the approval of the Union Home Ministry as per the rules laid down in section six of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
