Imphal, May 11:
Confirming the report of nine deaths including the six infants due to an outbreak of malaria and whooping cough in Chassad and Maokot village in Ukhrul district, its Deputy Commissioner Dr Suhel Akhtar has today submitted a report on the outbreak of the disease to the State Government.
The officer confirmed the outbreak of the epidemic following a two day on the spot inquiry.
The DC was accompanied by the health officers of the district.
Disclosing this to The Sangai Express a well placed source said that the report clearly mentioned that over 50 children of Maokot and its adjoining villages are presently suffering from whooping cough while four adults have been reported as suffering from malaria.
All the children suffering from whooping cough are in the age group of 2 to 4 years.
The DC has urged the Government to immediately despatch a medical team comprising paediatrics and adequate medicine to the affected villages.
During the tour, the DC and his team found the Kamjong hospital acutely short of essential medicine.
To compound the abysmal condition, power connection of the hospital has been snapped since March.
