Imphal, February 24:
In remembrance of signing of Treaty of Yandaboo between the British and the Burmese Governments on this day in 1826 recognising Maharaja Gambhir Singh as the king of independent Manipur, Ereipak Khanba Numit was observed at MDU Hall, Yaiskul Police Lane today.
Social worker Salam Biren, convenor of Celebration Committee, Ereipak Kanba Numit AK Janaki Leima and social worker Barikh Khan attended the function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Barikh Khan who have come from Cachar specially to attend the function, said history teaches us a good lesson on the harmful results of disunity and animosity among ourselves.
He recalled that in 1813, Prince Marjit waged war against his King brother Chourajit, and sought the assistance of Burmese King Badaopaya, thus giving a chance to the outsiders to interfere in the politics of the State.
Taking advantage of disunity among the Royal princes, the Burmese king installed Marjit as the king of Manipur, but only in name and later occupied the whole of Manipur Kingdom from 1819 to 1825, which has come to earn the infamous sobriquet of Seven Years Desertation in the history of Manipur, Barikh Khan said, adding this incident is the precursor to an endless coup attempt and tussle for power among the Manipuri princes which culminated in colonisation of Manipur by the British in 1891.The president of the function AK Janaki Leima took serious note of indiscipline and drug addiction among the youths of Manipur at this junction when the whole State is passing through a critical stage.
