Imphal, July 28 2009: Some Unknown persons shot dead another non-local businessman and injured a 10-year old boy by a stray bullet at Takyel Kolom Leikai under Lamphel Police station in Imphal West district at about 8 am today, even as residents of Sawombung in Imphal East district staged a sit in protest against the attack on a non-local man settled in the village by unknown armed persons yesterday.

The incident of gunning down the non-local who sells grocery items by moving around on a bicycle and injuring of a 10-year old boy by a stray bullet took place near a grocery shop at Takyel Kolom Leikai.

The non-local has been identified as Amit Shahu (35) from Karsar village of Buxar district in Bihar, staying at a rented house at Ragailong Pandon, Imphal.

He was engaged in selling grocery items from shop to shop in Imphal areas.

The 10-year old boy, who sustained injury from a stray bullet in his left thigh, is one Tongbram Tomba, son of T Dhananjoy of Sagolband Moirang Hanuba Leirak.

He is being treated in the surgery ward of RIMS Hospital.

The incident occurred in front of the shop run by one Paonam Shanti Devi while Amit was delivering grocery items to the shop.

Some unknown persons reportedly asked him why he was coming despite warning not to and shot him at least three rounds.

Two bullets hit the non-local, one in the chest and another in the belly.

He died on the spot, reports said.

The third bullet missed him but hit the boy who was buying edibles from the shop.

In the aftermath of the killing of the non-local, police launched a manhunt operation at Takyel area.

Verification of men from 14 to 45 years of age of the locality was held.

But there was no report of any arrest made.

The incident of gunning down the non-local businnessman happened while the residents of Sawombung area in Imphal East district staged a sit in protest at Sawombung market.

It may be recalled here that a non-local man who is married to a Kabui woman and running a grocery shop at Sawombung market was attacked by some unknown armed persons last evening severely injuring him.

The non-local hailing from Bihar's Patehpur district identified as Laldev Poddar (45), son of Rambabu Poddar, was shot at and injured in the head by three unknown persons inside his grocery shop at Sawombung Kabui village under Lamlai police station in Imphal East.

The non-local is currently struggling for life at the ICU of Shija Hospitals.

He is stated to be in serious condition.

The protest was organized jointly by Sawombung Khunjao Thoubei, Kabui Shairem Thoubei, Kabui Duigai Pangsang Youth Club and Women Society, and supported by Etam Nungoi Meira Paibi, Yourbung Khunou Meira Paibi, Sawombung Thongkhong Meira Paibi, Sawombung Gate Meira Paibi, Nungoi Khunou Meira Paibi, Nungoi Wangma Meira Paibi and Sawombung Khunjao Dukan Association.

Members of the bodies also participated in the protest.
