Imphal, May 18, 2010:
Despite the impact of shortage of rice, sugar and other essential goods being faced by the people on account of economic blockade imposed along the National Highways, District office FCI Imphal has stopped lifting of the State quota of PDS items like rice, sugar, etc.
According to official sources, in the opening balance of May 12, there were no other PDS items in stock with exception to 1459 metric tonne of wheat in the FCI godown at Sangaiprou.
In the FCI godown at Ukhrul, the stock was of only 3487 matric tonne of rice while in the Jiribam godown it was just 140 matric tonne of rice.
In spite of the limited stock and the problem being faced by the people, the District office FCI, Imphal which has its own transport contractors, has remained quiet from lifting of the State quotas of rice, sugar and other essential items on the pretext of economic blockade nor the State Government has given any instruction to the FCI in this regard, the source disclosed.
It is the responsibility of the FCI to bring the State quota of PDS items to Imphal and at its own expenditure, the source added.
