Imphal, December 08 2009:
Brushing aside the support extended to independent candidate Hanjabam Jayadeva in the upcoming Yaiskul AC by election, the Congress has claimed that it will not have any impact on the prospect of its candidate E Suraj.
Speaking to this reporter, spokesman of the MPCC (I), Seram Mangi said, "It is clear that the MPP and BJP are too weak to put up their own candidates and since they have no alternative, they have to support the independent candidate Jayadeva".
Asserting that the Congress supporters remain intact, Mangi claimed that more and more people are extending their support to the Congress, in view of the achievements of the Congress led SPF Government.
"We firmly believe that our candidate, E Suraj will win hands down," asserted the spokesman.
Seram Mangi further said that there will be no fresh poll agenda of the Congress.
However the commitment of the party to serve the people towards peace and development will continue unhindered.
On a confident tone, the spokesman said that the protest against the July 23 BT Road incident will have no bearing on the by election.
"It will be wrong for the other candidates to woo the voters on the July 23 plank," he added.
We respect the sentiments of the on the issue and that is why the Judicial Inquiry has been instituted.
No guilty personnel would be allowed to go scot free," he claimed and added that there is also strong likelihood that a solution might be at hand to end the impasse.
By-election to the Yaiskul by election will be held on December 19 .
The by election has been necessitated due to the demise of the then sitting Congress MLA, E Kunjeshore, father of the current Congress candidate E Suraj.
Other than E Suraj and Hanjabam Jayadeva, an independent, two other candidates are in the fray.
The two are former Editor of the local vernacular daily, S Rajendra and independent candidate A Jagdish Sharma.
Jayadeva was a Congress Councillor in the Imphal Municipal Council.
