Imphal, May 30 2010:
At least three IRB Riflemen have been killed in a road mishap while one Havildar sustained injuries in a tragic road mishap that took place at Awang Potshangbam Khullen Lamkhai under Sekmai police station this afternoon.
Four IRB personnel were coming back to their Nillakuthi post in a car (Maruti Alto) after procuring LPG cylinders and ration materials from Awang Sekmai when they met with the fatal accident at about 12.30 pm, said a police source.
As they turned left on the inter-village road leading to their post from the highway, the car skidded into a canal and fell sideways.
The spot located between Potshangbam Khunou and Potshangbam Khullen, besides being uninhabited, the water current of the canal was very swift as the canal was in spate.
Even as three Riflemen died in the tragic mishap, local people could save the Havildar.
The three deceased Riflemen have been identified as Mangshatabam Sanjoy (28) s/o Tomba of Luwangshangbam Makha Leikai, Chingakham Romesh (30) of Sunusiphai and Khwairakpam Bisheswar (30) of Phubala Awang Leikai.
It is reported that Sanjoy was the owner of the ill-fated car.
The injured Havildar is one Angam.
Police speculated that the car might have skidded into the canal due to a mechanical failure.
