The State Government has started the process of making potable water available at the border areas of the State and has also simultaneously taken up steps to instal a Biological and Heavy Metal Laboratory to test the purity of the water being supplied to the people.
Taken up by the Public Health Engineering Department at the personal initiative of the Chief Minister, special steps have been put in motion to ensure water supply in the border areas of the State, said a well placed source from PHED.
The survey work has been completed in some areas and the process of implementing the scheme has been taken up in some places, said the source.
The water supply schemes which will come up at the border areas include, Konkan-Kultap in Ukhrul district on the Indo-Myanmar border, New Somtal in Chandel district on the Myanmar border, Laii in Ukhrul district on the Nagaland-Manipur border, Thamphung in Senapati district on the Manipur-Nagaland border and Sinzawl in Senapati district on the Manipur-Mizoram border.
The schemes taken up at these said places will supply drinking water to 10 large villagers.
The schemes are to be taken up under the State Plan and efforts are on to inaugurate them before Christmas this year, said the source.
On the other hand to test the purity of water being supplied to the people as well as to detect any harmful substances contained in food items, a Biological and Heavy Metal Laboratory will soon be set up, added the source.
The lab is to be set up at an estimated cost of Rs 45 lakhs and a detailed project report has been submitted to the Centre.
In the meantime, revival schemes have been taken up to revive four out of the 13 water supply schemes in Imphal, said the source.
Those included in the revival scheme are Singda , Ningthempukhri, Koirengei and Porompat (phase-II).
The Ningthempukhri water supply scheme is to be revived under the Additional Central Assistance.
