Out of 44 four-wheeler vehicles that left Imphal to pick up CRPF personnel to be deployed for the forthcoming 15th Lok Sabha election in the State, one of the vehicles has been reportedly hijacked and its driver abducted by unidentified armed persons from Dimapur.
According to information received from the Dimapur Police, the Tata Sumo bearing registration no.MN01-K/6588 which was a part of the vehicle convoy had been hijacked and its driver abducted by unidentified armed persons at a spot in between Patkai bridge and Kuki Dolang along National Highway 39 at around 7 pm yesterday.
However, the abducted driver identified as N Momo Singh reached Dimapur at around 6 am today and reported the matter to the police.
How the driver was released or how he managed to escape from the clutches of the abductors have not yet been ascertained.
Meanwhile, official sources from Imphal informed that the vehicle convoy comprising mostly Tata Sumo had left from Imphal along with security escorts led jointly by a Liaison Officer of the State Police and another Liaison Officer of the CRPF.
Though news of hijacking one of the vehicles along the way had been received, the details of the incident have not been available, the source said, adding that the DGP of Manipur has communicated to his Nagaland counterpart for assistance in tracing the hijacked Tata Sumo.
According to another source, the vehicle convoy that left from Imphal arrived bringing the CRPF personnel.
However, the exact strength of the CRPF personnel arrived could not be verified till the filing of this report.
