From tendering his service as the Head of Surgery Department of RIMS to Chairman designate of Manipur Public Service Commission, the journey has been long and eventful for Dr Amarjit Singh Lukram.
Soft spoken, Dr Amarjit Singh while interacting with The Sangai Express today said that what he learnt during his medical days inside the operation theatre will stand him in good stead while discharging his new duties.
The underlying criteria is, good handling, accuracy and sincerity-all hallmarks of a surgeon.
Dr Amarjit is the second person from the medical profession to make it as the Chairman of the MPSC, the first one being Dr Nungshi.
The 58 year old doctor, who hails from Sega Road, Top Leirak was appointed the Chairman of MPSC along with former Finance Officer of MU L Manao and former Air Force officer T Misao as members.
"I felt great when I was informed of my appointment yesterday," said Dr Amarjit but added, "Since I am yet to assume office, I still have no knowledge about the system and structures of the Commission." The doctor however informed that he will be joining service tomorrow.
Spelling out his priorities, the former HoD of Surgery Dept said, "Stress will be given to uphold the credibility of the Commission.
I don't want the ugly incidents of the past which besmirched the image of MPSC during my tenure as its head".
Drawing inspiration from his days as a surgeon, Dr Amarjit said, "The functioning of the Commission will be based on sincerity, good co-ordination and accuracy".
Besides this, high integrity, confidence and good team spirit of all are the essential ingredients, added the new Chairman.
"Streamlining the Commission is the top priority".
Responding to a query, Dr Amarjit said that his 30 years of service as a doctor must have tilted the scale in his favour.
The new Chairman also promised to look into the reasons why the State Govt is reluctant to clear the syllabus of the proposed Manipur combined civil service examination.
Born on July 1, 1947, Dr Amarjit has a brilliant academic record, bagging the second position in the Matriculate examination conducted by Gauhati University in 1963.He obtained his MBBS from Osmania University in 1970 and obtained MS (General Surgery) from Banaras Hindu University in 1975.Dr Amarjit then passed the National Board of examination in General Surgery in 1982 and awarded the Fellow of the International College of Surgeons, Indian section.
He was also conferred the Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
