Imphal, May 31:
At least 11 children have been killed following an outbreak of diarrhoea in the villages adjoining Churachandpur and Chandel districts in the last few days.
Following the outbreak of the contagious disease, the Community Health Centre at Sugnu is over flowing with patients and the health centre is hard pressed to meet the demands of the sick and ailing.
To tackle the situation and help it bring under manageable control, the State Government has asked the army authority to extend whatever help they can.
Villagers informed The Sangai Express that following the outbreak of diarrhoea in the villages lying in the adjoining area of Churachandpur and Chandel districts, 11 children have died till date while over 50 are currently being treated.
Some families have even lost upto three children, they informed.
The villagers said that the front portion of the Community Health Centre of Sugnu, the corridors and verandahs and even the garage are overflowing with patients and even today children are being admitted in hordes to the medical centre.
As security personnel have occupied quite a large portion of the medical centre, the problem of accommodating the increasing number of patients have only compounded, said the villagers.
The medical centre has run out of stock of essential medicines to treat diarrhoea, said the villagers informing that even the local pharmacies have run out of stock.
When The Sangai Express contacted the Principal Secretary (Health) V Chhibber, the senior IAS officer confirmed the report and said that children have died due to the outbreak of diarrhoea in the said area.
A medical team was even sent there some time back, he added.
Quoting the report submitted by the medical team, Chhibber said that so far six children have succumbed to the disease.
To control the spread of the disease, the Government has sought the help of the army, added the officer.
