Imphal, January 12:
In a welcome gesture, All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur (ATSUM) relaxed its indefinite economic blockade along the National Highways today to enable the stranded truck drivers to participate in the Drivers' Day observance to be held on January 14.Subsequently, around 320 loaded trucks arrived at Imphal today.
A large number of loaded trucks coming from Dimapur remained stranded at Mao Gate following the indefinite economic blockade imposed by the student body along the National Highways since the intervening nights of January 4 and 5.

Pasted with stickers inscribed 'Solidarity with Drivers' Day' issued by the student body, the stranded trucks were allowed to proceed from Mao Gate this morning, Apam said, adding that the decision to lift the blockade for one day was taken after considering the request of the Senapati District Drivers' Welfare Union.
The blockade would resume from tomorrow again, Apam stated firmly, adding that any transporters who defy the blockade would themselves be held responsible for any eventualities.
Meanwhile, president of Senapati District Drivers' Welfare Union K Kapani and general secretary of All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers' Union Hamom Kullamani, on behalf of all the drivers and Union members have expressed gratitude to the student body for suspending the economic blockade for one day and allowing free passage to the stranded truck drivers to allow participation in the Drivers' Day celebration.
The Union leaders have also appealed to the Government to bring about an amicable solution with the agitating student body so that the drivers can carry out their duties without any hindrance.
Acting on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the Gauhati High Court had directed both the State and the Central to take up all necessary steps so that the ongoing economic blockade imposed by ATSUM does not affect free transport of goods the National Highways passing through Manipur.
