Imphal, September 07, 2010: After three PLA cadres surrendered to the IG AR (South) yesterday, six cadres of different UG outfits laid down arms today at Mantripukhri Hqs of IG AR (S).

The six UG cadres who laid down arms today before DGP Y Joykumar and IG AR (S) Maj Gen CA Krishnan included three cadres of the PLA, two of KCP and one cadre of the UPPK.

The PLA cadres have been identified as Lance Corporal Haobijam Gyaneshwar alias Sanahal alias Lamyanba (19) s/o Prem of Sugnu Napat, Private Wangamba Huidrom (23) s/o Khomei of Sugnu Awang Leikai and Laishram Priyokumar alias Meino (23) s/o Rupachandra Meitei of Chairel Khongnang Leikai.

The two KCP cadres as Private Heikrujam Ngongo alias Tondonba (20) s/o Amuba of Sugnu Napat and Private Ningthoujam Tolen alias Chinglen (21) s/o Khoidum of Sugnu Napat.

The surrendered UPPK cadre is one RK Naocha (32) s/o late Angousana of Naran Konjil.

The three PLA cadres brought along one M 16 rifles, two 9 mm pistols and three magazines.

Ngongo and Tolen surrendered one 9 mm pistol and one magazine each.

Naocha laid down one AK-47 rifle with a magazine.

Speaking at the occasion, DGP Y Joykumar remarked that there has been a spurt in UG cadres surrendering before the authority in recent times.

Observing that this was a good sign, the DGP assured all possible help to the surrendered cadres.

The surrender function organised by 9 Sector, AR was also attended by family members of the surrendered UG cadres.

Meino's father Rupachandra said that he would like the Government to protect the surrendered cadres.

Speaking to media persons after the surrender ceremony, Joykumar said attacks on schools were carried out by UG groups using widows and drug addicts to earn easy money.

Those demanding money from schools are over ground workers of UG groups.

They would be offered Rs 500/Rs 1000 or sometimes Rs 2000 to widows and drug addicts to deliver demand letters.

Referring to the monetary demand served to teachers of Don Bosco School, Chingmeiong, the DGP asserted that such activities cannot be justified even if Rs 250 demanded from each teacher is a trifling amount.

Noting that the people have started raising their voice against disturbances to schools, Joykumar said that police would put in all efforts to realise what is desired by the people.

Meanwhile, a press release issued by the PRO of Hqs IG AR (S) said that so far this year 58 militants have surrendered to the IG AR (S), 49 of them with arms.

Most of these cadres are young men in their teens or early twenties who were misled and taken away by insurgent groups in their tender age.

Such surrender events would further pave way for other misguided youth to follow suit.

Home coming of these young people should usher in a situation conducive for other members of the valley based groups to lay down arms, abjure violence and join the mainstream.
