Imphal, May 19 2009:
The absence of permanent dumping sites for waste materials has stalled the clearance of garbage in Imphal Municipality area for six consecutive days Tuesday.
The erstwhile dumping site at Lamphelpat for discarding waste solid materials has long been ceased to be used following complain by the local residents and a pending case over the possession of the site.
"The site at Lamphelpat which was used earlier for piling up of garbage has been no more in use due to complain lodged by the locals," Chairperson of Imphal Municipal Council, Rani said.
The IMC Chairperson said that the Chief Minister was also approached concerning the matter, adding the CM has assured assistances for the early settlement of the issue.
The protest by the local residents has been justifiable as the foul-smell emanated by the stink from the site is nauseatingly horrific, the IMC chairperson observed.
She said that the local residents have also urged for building fences around the site and to construct a gate.
Rani also conveyed that the IMC has met the locals this morning.
The JCB/Dozers and other vehicles of the IFCD and PWD have been employed to clear the area since this morning.
She also said that fencing and gate will be constructed around the dumping site as soon as possible and trashes will be dumped along with.
She further said that a chowkidar will also be employed to look after the site.
The chairperson further charts out that chlorinated powder to disinfect the site will be bleached twice daily.
She adds that the fencing will be barbed also to prevent individual litterers, who are also responsible for the disorder of the garbage dump site.
Till the Solid Waste Management project at Lamdeng has been completed, the hitches in dumping solid waste materials will prevail, she said.
Meanwhile, the public of Imphal Municipal area are facing problem in the absence of suitable place for dumping there garbage though several NGOs have collected waste solid materials from every locality.
The collected solid waste materials waiting to be dumped are a common sight in the Imphal Municipal area.
There are also apprehensions that the piled up garbage may be infectious apart from emitting foul-smelling.
