Bandh cripples normal life

Imphal, October 15 2011:
Normal life in Manipur was crippled on Saturday due to the bandh call given by the Coordinating Committee of seven banned insurgent groups of the state to protest against the Shillong "Merger Agreement of 1949", which ultimately resulted in the merger of Manipur with the Indian Union.
These underground organisations called it as Black Day.
All shops and business establishments were shut down and vehicles including public transports and inter-state bus services were off the roads.
Schools and colleges were also remained closed.
All the private and Government establishments were also paralyzed due to the strike that began in the passed midnight and ended at 5:30 pm Saturday.
However, no untoward incidents were reported over the course of the strike on Saturday.

The Coordination Committee comprising of KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK (Pro), RPF, UNLF and UPPK imposed the general strike showing dissension against the alleged deceptive and forceful merger of Manipur with the Indian Union.
The Merger Agreement was signed between Bodhchandra, the then king of Manipur and the representatives of Indian Government on October 15, 1949 in Shillong, Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, The Black Day commemorating the forced merger of Manipur into the Indian Union in 1949 was observed throughout in the state.
Frustrated agitators at different places burnt copies of Merger Agreement, Indian Constitution and Indian National Flags.
Many also soiled the Indian National Flags and tore them with their feet and dumped in public toilets showing off their frustration to the forced merger of Manipur into the Indian Union.
